Consultation on design of Wales and Border Rail Service including Metro

RFG was pleased to contribute to Transport for Wales’ consultation on the new Wales and Border Rail Franchise.

While most of the issues raised in the consultation are outwith RFG’s remit, we wished to respond to the question posed on Page 29 regarding the continuation or otherwise of freight on the Core Valley Lines. While accepting that there appears currently to be a declining demand for rail freight in the Valleys, RFG would argue that circumstances may well change significantly over the years to the likely end of new Franchise in 2033, just as there have been radical changes over the last 15-20 years. As a result we believe there is a strong case for at least maintaining rail freight capability and existing access rights along those routes which have handled (often substantial) flows in recent years.
