Consultation on the future of the Scottish Planning system

The Rail Freight Group (RFG) is pleased to take this opportunity to respond to the 2017 ‘Consultation on the future of the Scottish planning system’.

As much of the consultation, and many of the specific questions posed, do not impinge on areas relevant to rail freight, we are submitting this single statement in response, rather than seeking to respond to individual questions on-line.

In previous transport policy consultations, we have emphasised the potential for rail freight to play a bigger part in realising key Scottish Government objectives for the economy, climate change, road safety, etc. Strategic policies, programmes and plans – using appropriate planning, regulatory, investment, grant aid and other incentivisation measures – need to ensure that partnership between the public and private sectors is facilitated, delivering the substantial commercial and policy benefits of increased rail freight.
