Huw Merriman joins RFG in consultancy role
Rail Freight Group (RFG) is pleased to welcome former Rail and Regional Transport Minister, and former Chair of the House of Commons Transport Select Committee, Huw Merriman, who joins us in a consultancy capacity.
Huw brings a wealth of experience from his time in government and a long-standing commitment to the UK rail industry. With his deep experience and passion for the sector, he will be extremely valuable in supporting our work to grow the share of goods moved by rail and help deliver the sector’s full benefits for the UK’s economy, environment and communities.
Huw said: “I’m delighted to start work with RFG. Despite impressive growth last year, rail freight moves just 7% of all UK freight. We can do much more. Rail reform, underpinned by the 2050 rail freight growth target of 75%, can provide a platform for growth, transport decarbonisation and the delivery of the new homes, offices and infrastructure needed to meet the Government’s growth mission.
“Whilst not every taxpayer is a passenger on the trains they subsidise, every taxpayer will consume or utilise something delivered by rail freight. That’s why it’s crucial that we continue to allow freight and passenger equal billing,” he added.
RFG Director General Maggie Simpson OBE said: “Huw brings a powerful voice to the sector at a critical time for reform and investment and we are absolutely delighted to have him working with us.”
Huw is particularly keen to hear from, and collaborate with, members who are looking to showcase and grow rail freight capability so do contact Huw if he can help. You can email him directly at huwmerriman@gmail.com
