Mentoring Programme

See how our Cross-Member Mentoring Programme can help build your career in rail freight

RFG's Cross-Member Mentoring Programme is free to anyone working for an RFG member company. It has been a great success in previous years, bringing together mentors and mentees from across the rail freight and supply chain sectors.

About the scheme

The mentoring scheme is currently underway and provides a conventional mentoring relationship while also allowing mentors and mentees to enhance their skills and knowledge of rail freight. We have had fantastic feedback from everyone involved in the first two years of the programme and are expecting this year to be just as exciting.
Our programme is led by Deanne Logan, a highly experienced coach, mentor and facilitator. She works to match couples effectively and provides initial training and regular check-ins over the year, ensuring continuous support. All mentees and mentors attend a virtual one-hour training session, which provides an opportunity to understand the programme and the role in more detail, ask questions, and learn what additional resources are available.
On these calls, people can share their prior experiences and best practices while learning new skills and/or tools to support the relationships. Joining as a mentor is also an opportunity for experienced rail freight leaders to support someone in their career by sharing skills, knowledge, and experience and coaching them in any next steps they may need.
Anyone who is working in an RFG member company can join as a mentor, mentee or both – you don’t have to be in a rail freight-specific role to join the programme. The programme officially started with introductory video calls which you can view on our YouTube Channel.

What are the successes of the programme?

● Confidence and self-esteem of mentees has increased
● Building connections and networking for both mentors and mentees
● Developing a deeper understanding of rail freight for mentees
● Over half of the relationships have included site visits as part of the learning – with very positive feedback from both parties
● Development of skills as a Mentor – coaching, listening, leadership, encouraging action

What is the mentoring programme?

This programme aims to help develop rail freight skills across the sector and support individuals with their own personal development. You can join the programme as a mentor, mentee or both. Based on your individual skills, experience and needs, you will be matched with someone from a different organisation, where you will meet virtually (or in person if you prefer and geography allows) between 6-12 times in 2026. Both mentors and mentees will be supported with training and resources before you get started to ensure the relationship is as effective as possible.
