National Policy Statement for Fusion Energy Generation (EN-8) Consultation Response from Rail Freight Group
Rail Freight Group (RFG) was pleased to respond to the National Policy Statement for Fusion Energy Generation (EN-8) Consultation.
Fusion energy plants are predicted to require several million tonnes of concrete materials, respectively. Rail freight’s high load capacity, lower carbon emissions compared to diesel trucks, and avoidance of road traffic make it an ideal transport solution.
Efficient, low-carbon transport and logistics solutions, including rail freight, must be a strong consideration in the NPS and factored into the early planning stages to ensure they are used throughout the development of low-carbon energy infrastructure.
Naming rail freight in the NPS provides certainty and ensures that developers consider sustainable transport from the outset. A strong example of this practice in other government consultations is the proposed draft revision for the Heathrow Expansion.
