Rail Freight Group was pleased to respond to the Invest 2035: The UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy green paper.
Rail freight is a key element of the UK’s freight and logistics network. Overall, rail freight moves around 10% of all surface freight transport, with particularly strengths in certain areas. For example, around one quarter of all containerised trade moves to and from UK ports by rail, and 40% of construction aggregates reaches the south east by freight train. Rail freight supports steel making, cement production, industrial chemicals and minerals as well as retailers, shippers and consumers, and has a significant role in supporting major infrastructure construction such as Hinkley Point and HS2. Our members are already looking at the potential for rail freight to support new markets such as synthetic fuels, hydrogen and carbon capture and storage.
